What we'll be covering:

  • FOUNDATIONS OF GROUP - PURPOSE, PREPARATIONS, PAPERWORK:

Why do a women's group? Let me count thy ways! Together, we'll explore your readiness, expectations, and your role as a group facilitator. We'll also cover how to set up your physical space for a super cozy circle. I'll share my research results surveying fifty providers of women's groups on their best tips, biggest barriers and more. On the paperwork side, we'll look at group records, tracking forms, notebooks, consent forms (with sample forms for you to adapt), feedback forms, and more.

  • SAFETY AND STRUCTURE OF GROUP:

Physical, emotional, and sexual safety is essential from DAY 1! This includes how you screen women for group readiness, how you review group rules, and what you'll do when (not if) members break them. This will include a sample script for addressing the delicate issue of crushes in group. We'll also cover options for communication outside of group, and an example of setting up group structure (which will evolve over time with your group).

  • 3 STAGES OF WOMEN'S GROUP DEVELOPMENT:

Should you start with a following a workbook, a mix of your own favorite content, or talking/process time - or some combination thereof? We will review three stages of group structure/process balance that have been tried and tested over many years working with women's groups, and how to know when your group is ready for the next stage - and how to move them towards it.

  • GROUP TRANSITIONS: EXITING MEMBERS, NEW MEMBERS, CLOSING A GROUP AND TAKING BREAKS

Changes in group membership happen for many reasons, and we'll explore what to expect and how to respond to changes gracefully. We will look at transition pitfalls that can sink a group, and when it's time to take a break. Here we will discuss welcome and good-bye rituals. Also we will talk about common feelings providers have to wrestle with when offering groups, some positive, and some--not so much--and how to get support.

  • CONFLICT AND FLOODING IN GROUP

Now we're getting somewhere! Since conflict and flooding will naturally occur in a healthy group, this module will help you make sure you know how to respond (not react) to guide group members toward emotional regulation and conflict management skills. Favorite tools will be offered, including handouts and links to more information.

  • PROMOTING YOUR GROUP

Now your notebooks are prepped, your paperwork is ready, and your safe group space is all set - but where do you find the women? Here we will review effective outreach methods (and less effective ones) to help you alert the community that you're ready to go! We will also review best practices in web design to attract women who will most benefit from your services.
